From Odissea to Rurik via NIS.
I was aboard one of Jonas’s boats, at the end of a pleasant week-end with my daughter in Cinque Terre, when Michele called. “Would you like a wooden boat?” he asked. It seemed the perfect end to a pleasant outing. “I’ll take it if you say it’s good,” I answered

Cores Srl is specialised in the static strengthening of wooden and brick structures in conservative restorations. It provides restoration and maintenance of listed buildings.

Cores is one of the leading companies in the field of strengthening techniques in extreme conditions, such as resin injections in the depths of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

An announcement was published in Bolina: 1936 Cutter for sale. I contacted Giorgio and discovered the RURIK. Shameless owners had ruined most of it. The deck and the deckhouse were horrendous but the untouched hull was magnificent. It had a full, powerful prow, a long keel, a flute-shaped stern and ocean structure. A friend introduced me to Vanino Bigio, a shipwright from Carloforte, who looked at the boat’s structure and tidy floor timbers. “This boat is far from worthless, Riccardo,” he said.
I could not restore the RURIK, but really I had no choice. Photographs were sent, searches made in every maritime museum in northern Europe, partial confirmation obtained, everybody was very interested – this spurred me to continue. For two years I developed a project that required me to establish the hull’s construction date and thus restore the boat to its original condition.
